Manchester United has confirmed that
Cristiano Ronaldo
has left the club, effective immediately.
He
terminated
the contract after he made sweeping criticism of Erik ten Hag and United in an
interview
with Piers Morgan.
" Old Trafford thanks him for his contributions across two spells, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well."
"Erik ten Hag's team remains focused on progress under his leadership and working together to deliver success on the pitch."
Sources have told ESPN that
Ronaldo
wanted to leave and that United still needs to pay him to go.
Ronaldo
is in Qatar preparing for his first game at the World Cup, with Portugal due to face Ghana on Thursday.
He can join another club immediately after
leaving
Old Trafford and will not have to wait until the January transfer window.
Sources
told
ESPN that United was ready to sue for breach of contract if a mutual termination could not be reached.
